South East Coast – Price Guide: From £196.00 per person All Inclusive

With just 5 spacious villas this exclusive hotel fronts on to one of the most attractive beaches on Zanzibar. Being small, the Hotel provides a very personal service and is flexible to individual guests needs. The Hotel is named after the Indian coin which used in Zanzibar in by-gone days.


The Hotel is approximately 60 kilometres from the Airport and Stone Town towards the northern part of the south-east peninsular. It takes a little under an hour to get there from Town.


The five individual villas are built in African-colonial style and are well separated from each other. Each villa has an airconditioned master bedroom, en-suite bathroom with separate shower, dressing room, separate spacious lounge and private terrace overlooking the tropical gardens and out to the beach/ocean. Their construction of local stone and traditional “makuti” (palm thatch) roofs mean they blend perfectly with the local environment. The villas are furnished in a Colonial/Zanzibari style. There is W-lan and Blackberry connection.


Within the spacious and lush tropical gardens which has 120 meter beach frontage there is a fresh water swimming pool of 150 square meters and private beach huts with sufficient loungers for all guests. The main guest building is also built in a traditional way and has a spacious bar, dining room and library. Meal times are not confined to the dining room as guests can choose to have meals near the pool, on the beach, at one of the beach huts or on the verandah of their villa.

There is a “Shisha” lounge where afternoon tea and/or sundowners can be taken. There is a beach-front spa offering a wide range of treatments. The Hotel has its own small boat for snorkelling trips and scuba diving can be arranged with a nearby dive centre. Meals are a fusion of African, Arabian, Indian and “western” style with an emphasis on fresh fish and seafood. Accommodation is on an All Inclusive basis.

Boutique Hotel Matlai

Currently one villa with 4 rooms which can be occupied separately, or the whole villa can be rented by a group of up to 8 people. Hotel Matlai offers a very personal atmosphere with the exclusive services one expects from a family owned/managed up-market, small hotel.


On the south east coast approximately one hours drive from Stone Town and the airport.


In Asili House there are currently four rooms, two on the ground floor and two on the upper floor. Each room is individually designed and decorated and much of the furniture is made by local craftsman. Accommodation is on a full board basis and includes 3 meals, plus afternoon tea/coffee, water and soft drinks – excludes alcoholic beverages. The plan is to add another villa of 4 rooms in 2013.

Facilities & Services

Set in beautifully landscaped tropical gardens, the Hotel fronts on to the beach. There is an infinity swimming pool, a spa, open air cinema and small library. Meals are served to suite guest’s times and guests can request personal menus provided by the chef and served by a personal butler. The ‘ZanziBar and Restaurant’ is located adjacent to one of the nicest beaches on the island. A wide range of excursions can be arranged by Hotel Matlai.

Chumbe Island Lodge

Off Stone Town – Price Guide: From £159.00 per person Full Board

Winner of many awards for conservation, is acclaimed as one of the most spectacular coral gardens in the world. Stay a couple of days at this nature reserve for a marine-life experience, wander the lush forest and mangrove trails and climb the historic lighthouse for breathtaking views over the turquoise seas.


12 Kms off Stone Town with a half hour boat transfer from Mbweni Ruins Hotel.


Accommodation is in one of the eight comfortable self contained “eco-bungalows”. Each bungalow, built of local materials, has 2 floors, with a lounge area downstairs and bedroom upstairs. Solar power is used and there are compost toilets.


The Island’s guides are available to take you on tours of the forest; snorkelling “safaris” are provided to see the coral reefs surrounding the Island.

With the recent development of large hotels, though not in the Matemwe locality, it is reassuring to know that small, elegant hotels offering guests a personalised cuisine are also being developed. Green & Blue offers a very high standard of facilities, service and food.

On the north east coast about 1 hour from the Airport and Stone Town. It is adjacent to the village of Matemwe and shares the beach with local fisherman who moor their sailing boats in the same bay. Even though it is on a relatively small block of land, bungalows and villas have reasonable privacy set among the lush, mature tropical gardens.


There are 13 spacious bungalows and one villa all built on two levels and each with a plunge pool and large veranda. All bungalows and villas can sleep up to 4 people. The 7 Garden View Bungalows are towards the rear/side of the site. There are 3 Pool Front Bungalows and 3 Ocean Front. The Ocean Front Villa has 2 en-suite bedrooms and inside and outside living area. The bungalows are naturally ventilated, the downstairs bedroom in the Villa has airconditioning. As one expects from an hotel of this standard, all rooms are furnished to a high and tasteful specification.


There are two swimming pools, one is beach side and another on a deck in an elevated location. The open sided restaurant is built on two levels, the upper area with magnificent views of the beach and ocean. The Hotel prides itself on its cuisine with two highly trained chefs using locally and freshly sourced ingredients. There is a spa and a wide range of activities are available including scuba diving, snorkelling, village walks and kite boarding. There is internet access and a small boutique.

This elegant Hotel is probably the most isolated Hotel on Zanzibar, ideal for those looking for no distractions from total relaxation. In addition to the sumptuous villas, it has a couple of other unique features. The beach of powder soft sand is less effected by the extreme tides experienced on other parts of the island so swimable 24 hours. Though located on the south east coast, it faces west so guests witness the magnificent sunsets.

On the south east coast about 1.5 hours from the Airport and Stone Town. In a very isolated location, the last part of the journey is on a very rough road.


There are 26 spacious, private individual villas each with a plunge pool, large veranda and private garden. Inside each has a bedroom area, extensive lounge/sitting area, dressing room and en-suite bathroom. All are airconditioned, LCD TV, mini bar and tea/coffee making facilities. There are 4 types of villas. The Garden Villas (85 sq M of internal space and 50 sq M patio) are towards the rear of the site each with a “forest garden” and do not have sea views. The 4 Sea View are the same dimensions and specification as Garden Villas but benefit from sea views. The 2 Family Villas also have the same dimensions but feature a double bed and 2 x single beds. The Beach Pavilions are smaller than the Villas but are located right on the beach.


There is an infinity swimming pool adjacent to the beach. The Beach Restaurant, situated adjacent to the pool with panoramic views of the sunset over Michamvi Bay, offers local and international cuisine. There is also a beach bar open during the day. There is a health spa, Reception is open 24/7 and laundry is provided free, but a charge is made for an ironing service.

Matemwe Bandas Boutique Hotel

Matemwe Bandas is an intimate “barefoot-chic” lodge with a reputation for providing high levels of service. It is faithful to its natural surroundings with the majority of construction and furniture sourced locally and built by Zanzibari craftsmen. It is substantially locally owned by Matemwe villagers and operates as a social enterprise in its community. All staff have been recruited, trained and employed from the village.

On the north east coast, approximately one hour from the Airport and Stone Town and fronts on to an idyllic, pristine, palm fringed beach – the stuff of dreams. It is adjacent to the interesting fishing village of Matemwe. There are no large hotel developments in the Matemwe locality – endless walks along the beach one meets local people rather than “toursist”.


There are just 6 spacious banda suites (banda is Swahili for bungalow) with private facilities and their own verandahs fronting the beach. They are built on stilts using traditional materials of coco wood with palm thatched “makuti” roofs. Furniture is hand crafted, including the four poster beds. Bed linen and towels are imported and of the highest quality. Two of the bandas can be combined to accommodate a family. Should guests wish, butlers will provide drinks and meals on their balcony. The continual shore breeze provides natural conditioning to rooms throughout the year.

Facilities and Activities

The restaurant serves local and international dishes. Fresh produce is sourced from nearby markets including daily catch from the fish market in Matemwe village. The chef will cater for any dietary needs and will be happy to prepare specially requested meals. Guests can take their meals on the beach or anywhere on the site for private dining. There is a swimming pool and a wide variety of excursions can be arranged including kite surfing and sea kayaking, scuba diving and snorkeling at some of the best sites on the island, nature tours, village tours, yoga sessions and massage on the Hotel’s tree-house deck.

Sultan Palace

Paola Sibilia, the owner/manager, has restored this small, exclusive hotel which provides the ultimate “bare-foot luxury”. The main building has a terrace overlooking the Ocean and on the first floor the restaurant serves international and Swahili cuisine. The meals are memorable, mainly Zanzibari and Mediterranean with lobster served several times each week.


North of the village of Bwejuu and approximately 1 hours drive from Stone Town.


15 individual cottages, each with their own little garden overlooking the beach and the Indian Ocean beyond. The cottages are extremely spacious (up to 150 square metres in the Imperial Suites) furnished to the very highest standard and each with a verandah where you enjoy your morning breakfast. Garden Suites look over the gardens. The Imperial Suites provide the largest and some of the most luxurious accommodation on Zanzibar.


There is an infinity swimming pool beside which is a small bar where complimentary afternoon tea is served. The central building houses the bar and restaurant as well as a terrace where breakfast is served. Lunches are served in the beach-side restaurant. The Hotel arranges snorkelling (from its own “ngawala”, a local fishing boat, in the lagoon in front of the hotel); scuba diving is organised through the dive centre at Breezes Beach Club and the Hotel can arrange big game fishing. Unguja Lodge

Ralph & Elies Kruidering have developed the Lodge to meet the needs of people looking for a real Zanzibar experience, comfort, relaxation, personal service and rewarding snorkelling & diving.


Adjacent to the village of Kizimkazi on the southern tip of Zanzibar just over an hours drive from Stone Town and the Airport. It is located close to the dolphin viewing area which can sometimes be seen from the Lodge.


There are just 10 villas built in a circular shape well separated from each other in extensive tropical gardens. All have a spacious bedroom with fan, mosquito net, safe and two wash basins. There is a spacious bathroom (shower, toilet and wash basin), in the Sea View Villas and the Villas the bathrooms overlook the ocean. Also on the ground floor there is a “baraza” style lounge/sitting area. Each villa has an upstairs “lounge” area which can also sleep 2 additional people. Whilst the rooms have similar dimensions, some specifications differ according to their location within the gardens. The Baobab Suites which do not have sea views from downstairs (they do from the upper area) have a plunge pool on the verandah and are airconditioned. Sea View Villas & Villas are closer to the sea have direct ocean views. There are 2 Family Houses built on two floors with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and so can sleep 6 people. They have an open plan sitting room and terrace with sea views.


There is a swimming pool and a separate restaurant with bar area which extends on to a timber decking area. There is an on-site dive centre and Ralph & Elies are both PADI qualified dive masters. A purpose built dhow was built to their specification to serve as a dive boat and also takes people wanting snorkel in deeper waters. At reception there is internet access and a telephone service. A range of excursions can be arranged and spa treatments are offered on some days of the week.
